In the past few centuries, attracting hard-working, high-skilled, high-level talents from all countries has been the most fundamental reason for the United States to maintain the number one position in the world. Democratic representative Barack Obama welcomes immigration to the United States to realize the American dream. 

For the Republican Party, however, a large number of Americans have lost their jobs. Many immigrants also cause security problems. The current US President Trump will build a national wall at the border between Mexico and the United States to prevent this problem from happening.

 For me, the issue of immigration has advantages and disadvantages. Immigration can bring huge labor and creativity to a country but also bring instability to a country. So the best way is to screen for those who want to immigrate to your country, and encourage those who have good conduct. And to prevent people with social problems.

Bias

Today, I want to talk about a word called “bias”, this word means prejudice. It carries subjective consciousness and emotions to look at problems and talk about people. I really don’t like this word because I think this word has a feeling of discrimination.

These days, China has an infectious pneumonia, it is very serious. In fact, China’s control of this epidemic virus is already very strict. But people in some countries are making a fuss. One of my friends studying in the UK mentioned this to me once. He said he was on the subway that time. He coughed a few times because of his uncomfortable throat and was heard by the people next to him. Those people looked at him disgustingly, and covered his nose with his hands away from him, which made him very uncomfortable. He has been staying abroad since he went abroad. He has no chance to come into contact with the virus. He just has an uncomfortable throat. But other people’s reactions made him very sad. So he told me about it.

 Although the virus in China has been said to be serious recently, the Chinese government and people are doing their best to fight the virus. So I think people in other countries should not have this attitude, but should look at this issue with a positive attitude. So, I really don’t like this word” bias”.

This week we started an event with a group conference on writing I-search. I have a lot to say about this group conference.

First of all, this group conference is a good group activity, which can increase the emotional communication between the students. Students can become more familiar with each other. We have changed our Wechat. When we meet questions, we can contact each other to solve it.

In addition, this group conference helped me find the shortcomings in my article. For example, some students in my group think that the first part of my article is deficient. For example, I did not express well the sub-problems I wanted to study. This is not good for readers to read my article. After I listened to his opinions and corrected the shortcomings in my article, I found that the suggestions he gave me can improve my article and make my article more logical.

What’s more, I also gave other group members many suggestions that can help them to improve their article.

However, this group comment also has a lot of shortcomings. For example, the group members did not give more opinions to others. And when I read someone else’s article, I did not understand it, but it was not marked. This is very irresponsible behavior.

Overall, I like this group conference very much, and I also believe that I can do better in group conferences in the future.

I want to analyze an English reading called The Giver. 

The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. ( Wikipedia)

It tells us a boy who is 12 years old that he becomes the receiver. After that, he will be infused with all kinds of memories, some memories will make him happy, some memories will make him sad. However, in this community, people do n’t have emotions. In the end, he decided to go out and share his memories with everyone so that they can have emotions.

Although they don’t need to be hungry in this world, they don’t have to worry about life, but if this is the condition, I would rather not. Although our world is not perfect.Even if there is war in the world, we still have love. Although there are many misfortunes in our world, we have hopes, surprises, and miracles.

What I learned from The Giver is that love and thanksgiving.

I studied in English 105 for about three weeks. In these three weeks, I also learned a lot about English writing skills.

The first result I learned was rhetorical knowledge. Rhetoric knowledge summarizes the rhetorical context, including author, audience, subject, purpose, and urgency. In addition, we understand the elements, attractiveness and technology

Then critical thinking, reading and writing. As you know, some of the materials we use cannot be used directly in the thesis. We need to integrate them. This is hard work. You will know which parts of the author agree and which do not.

Another learning outcome I learned was process. As with writing a Chinese article, you will prepare a draft before writing your thesis. In the draft, you will figure out how to write this article and how to connect the parts together.

Finally, I learned about convention in class. Although this is what I told you last, it is also very important. However, it cannot be used when writing a dissertation. When writing a paper, use indentation on the first line. This is a formal rule.

What you have learned about conducting interview

One thing I’ve been busy with these days is interviewing one of my roommates. Because we are writing I-search recently, the question is how to become an outgoing person. I have to interview others about this. My roommate Mattew is an outgoing person.So, I decided to interview him. Interviewing others is really not easy. You need to have time, and others also should have time. So I wrote a note to my roommate early to ask him about this, and he quickly responded to me his free time. 

Today is our meeting time. When he comes back from class, I say hello to him and take out a pen and paper to record the relevant information when everything is ready. He told me that it is a bit difficult for an introvert to become an extrovert. You are going to change your character. You have to participate in a variety of social activities, and at the same time you have to make a lot of friends and try to get along well with them. What’ more, learn and keep  practicing to gain presence through outgoing words and deeds. 

There are some benefits of being an outgoing person. Outgoing persons earn more, are considered more suitable for leadership, and have a larger network of relationships. The most important thing is that they can live a happy life.

At last, I say “Thank you” to him. He is very happy after my interview. Thought this interview, I learned a lot from his words. I decide to conclude these all and then write them in my I search paper.

Important rules of the class and using technology

In the 105 class, I learned many important rules and using technology. 

Don’t use our mobile phones in class. It is a vital thing. When we use our mobile phones, we may be distracted. And then, we can’t listen to the teachers carefully. This class is useless. After class, we don’t know how to finish the homework. What’s more, when you use your mobile phone, it is an expression of disrespect for the teacher. The teachers will not want to teach you something new. We also need to upload our homework on time. If you due your homework late, you will get some points, not all of the points. 

There are also some using technology. For example, how to use BBlearn. It is very important for the students at NAU. On BBlearn, you can know what courses you will have to attend, what teachers want to explain and what homework you will to finish. Moreover, you can view your grades. If you have a low grade, don’t worry, try your best to do other work. If your grade is very high, keep going, you need to keep your high grade. And next one is BBlearn you can submit your homework. Don’t submit your homework late.

In the class, Ms. Clark also taught us how to use google docs and word. There are both very convenient tools for us to write an essay or article. When you write an essay, remember to use TImes News Roman 12. And your paragraphs should set to double spacing.

Another thing that I want to say is not using google translation. It can’t can help you to learn your English. When you face English problems, you use google translation to find out. Sure, it is very convenient.  But you know, it can’t help you to improve your English.

Something that happened to you recently that you may use for an OP

As we all know, the Chinese New Year will come soon. So some of my friends decided to gather together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. 

Today is Friday, I don’t have work today. So, I get up at 10 a.m.. After I washed, I decided to go to find my friends. When I arrived at his dormitory, I found him sleeping. I sat in a chair for a while and waited for him to wake up to leave the dormitory with him. Everyone basically arrived at the place where we agreed before. Some people went to the Asian supermarket to buy some spices, and some went to the target to buy meat, vegetables and drinks. I chose to go to the supermarket. When I arrived at the supermarket, my friends and I chose something for a long time. Then we came to the dormitory of another of my friends. His dormitory is big enough to accommodate us all. Some people wash dishes and cook, others are playing some card games. We are enjoying this happy time. After a while, the hot pot was ready, and we said “Happy New Year”  to each other. At last, we started cooking. At the dinner table, we talked about a lot of recent funny things.The dishes in the hot pot is very delicious. I eat a lot. We toast to signal our blessings to each other. After eating, everyone brushed the dishes together. Finally, we all returned to our dormitories with New Year’s greetings.

The Chinese New Year is very important for every Chinese people. This day is also the day that each family members gather together to summarize the mistakes and gains of last year, and look forward to a good year. Although I was in America, I could feel the happiness of this day with my friends

Today I read a sample essay. This essay is an I-search paper. The author told us his process to find out the sources and the effects of plastic waste. This paper has a very high grade. I can learn many essay structure from it.

Firstly, we need to have a general understanding of a paper. For example, I search we should have 4 parts: What I Know and What I Want to Find Out. My Search Process. What I Concluded/How This Research Matters. Reference. For part one, we need to write what we know about our question and what we want to find out. In part two, we need to write the process of how we find out this question. What’s more, we can use Google to search many sources to help us. And we can interview others who know more about this question. Next, we should conclude what we know about this question thought part one and part two. At last, write the references. It is very important because if you quote others’ articles without references, it will be considered plagiarism. 

And then, we need to use Times New Roman 12 to write our paper. All of the words we write need to obey this. And for paragraphs, we need to set them to double spacing. 

In the class, Ms. Clark teaches us part one. In the sample essay, the author wrote the hook first. It can help him to catch the audiences’ attention. Moreover, he wrote the background of himself. In addition, he wrote what he knew about this question. At last, he wrote what he wanted to learn about this question. It is a good sample essay. I can learn a lot to help me write my essay. 

In the sample essay, we also need to write our names, our teacher’s name, our course and the date.
